JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: CNC Machinist - 2nd Shift
Full Time: Mon - Thurs. Start time 3.30 pm. (Four 10 hour shifts)
LOCATION: 1507 1st Avenue, Mankato, MN 56001
POSTING DATE: 8/01/08

SUMMARY OF POSITION: Under the general supervision of the 2nd shift CNC Supervisor, the CNC Machinist programs, sets up and operates CNC machining equipment to manufacture parts that meet customer specifications and company standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES include the responsibility to work with the Supervisor / co-workers to perform the following:

  1. Selects tooling and fixturing for assigned jobs in the production schedule. Converts customer blueprints into CNC computer programs as requested.
  2. Mounts fixturing, loads tools and transfers computer programs.
  3. Machines parts to meet production quality and quantity standards. Performs in-process inspection.
  4. Assists other department personnel with machine setups as needed. Operates other production equipment as required.
  5. Performs material handling functions, daily machine maintenance and clean up as required.
  6. Optimizes the production process by suggesting plant and equipment improvements, makes design suggestions for tooling and fixturing and suggests improvements to the manufacturing approach for customer orders.
  7. Other duties or tasks may be assigned as required. Management may modify change or add to the duties of this description at any time without notice.)

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Two year vocational degree or one to three years equivalent experience with CNC equipment. Knowledge of approved methods, materials and tools used in the metalworking industry. A demonstrated potential to accept increasing responsibility with increasingly more complex CNC equipment.

COMPUTER SKILLS: Must be able to program CNC equipment or be able to learn to program it. Coordinate measuring machines. Must be comfortable with word processing software.

LANGUAGE, ORAL, WRITTEN AND LISTENING SKILLS:

  • Must be able to read and analyze blueprints / instructions and interpret the equivalent of general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with supervisors and co workers.
  • Must be a good listener.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Must be able to calculate figures and amounts such as set offs, proportions and percentages. Must be able to apply concepts of industrial math, including geometry and trigonometry.

REASONING ABILITY AND OTHER SKILLS: Must be able to,

  • Recognize incomplete or conflicting information / instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Identify problems or the potential for a problem.
  • Respond professionally in situations where only limited choices exist.
  • Consult with a supervisor if there is any lack of clarity regarding the task at hand.
  • Cooperate and work with a wide range of individuals.
  • Be responsible and accept responsibility.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT includes the following: (The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The employee works in a manufacturing environment and will be exposed to dirt, noise, grease on hands and clothes, moving machinery, flying debris and splashed liquids. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS USED include the following: (Tools and equipment listed are some of the typical tools and equipment; other equipment may be used as needed.) Must be able to program and operate some CNC metalworking equipment. Must be able to operate some manual metalworking lathes, grinders, mills, saws and drill presses. Must be able to operate hand tools such as hammers, wrenches, drills, flat files, grinders and other deburring tools. Must be able to operate a forklift and manual QC measuring equipment and understand coordinate measuring machines. Must be able to use a computer and a scientific calculator.

The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds.
